CAMRA Good Beer Guide (v. 3.0.1.9) Разработано Greenius |
By the end of March 2013 we will release an Android update in which old datasets from past editions of the Good Beer Guide can be downloaded for free, if you had them before September 2012 (when the new subscription-based app was released). At the same time, all your favourites, visited pubs and notes from previous editions will be retrieved. This data was to be available in the new version of the app from release, but technical issues have delayed this. Our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.
Please note that the retrieval of this information is not possible if you have uninstalled the app since September 2012, as the data was stored on your phone. In this update, your favourites will now be stored remotely under your Good Beer Guide Mobile account and can't be lost by uninstalling, doing a factory reset or changing your phone. This also means that the subscription features of app can be used on more than one device, and cross-platform, without additional cost by signing into your account (so long as the app is installed on all devices).
The Good Beer Guide app is a service to help you find pubs in the UK that consistently serve cask conditioned real ale in good condition, as well as provide information about breweries and beers using information from the Good Beer Guide, UK's best-selling, independent guide to great beer and great pubs, which is published annually by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and now in its 40th year.
This is a free app with an optional annual subscription. Without a subscription the app will have limited functionality allowing you to find the nearest pub and brewery to you. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of the app you will get a free subscription as soon as you create an account.
The Good Beer Guide is created through the work of thousands of volunteer CAMRA members resulting in an annual publication containing the top 4500 pubs that consistently serve well conditioned real ale.
Simple to use, Good Beer Guide Mobile offers the following features:
Complete entries for over 4,500 independently-selected urban and rural pubs, giving details of beer, food, opening hours, accommodation, transport links, pub history, disabled access, facilities for families and more. The entire content of the pubs and brewery sections of the Good Beer Guide 2013 book is included in the subscribed version.
Fully independent pub reviews, written by local CAMRA members. Unique tasting notes for regular beers, written by trained CAMRA tasting panels. Any regular beers served at a pub have the full tasting notes about that beer. All the information is in the app so there is no need to be online when you search for a pub or brewery. You only need to be online to download updates or search from an address/postcode.
The My Guide feature makes it easy to keep tasting notes, favourites, visited pubs, or your own review of the pub. Save your favourite pubs in My Guide, so you can quickly go back to them later. Search from your current location, a postcode, place name or London tube station. Interactive maps within the app help you find your way. Launch the full Maps application to get step by step directions.
Changes to pubs that are reported to CAMRA between editions are automatically updated in the app.
Good Beer Guide Mobile for Android is developed and published by Greenius Mobile.

New Features:
* The app is now free with an optional in-app purchase to subscribe to the full service for a year. Without a subscription the app operates in taster mode, which allows finding the nearest pub to you and a limited selection of brewery information. With a subscription you get all of the features until the end of the subscription at which point it goes back to taster mode.

[2013-03-08] A Google User: Pretty good Just wish you could search on beers and breweries a well as pubs. |
[2013-03-03] A Google User: Paywall Everything locked behind pay wall. Pointers. Either hsve it free and ad supported or paid for. |
[2013-03-02] A Google User: Needs some improvements As a CAMRA member I've bought the Good Beer Guide (£12) every year, for the last 20 years, so I'm very tempted not to buy it and subscribe to the app. Does need some improvements though; better pub information on map, search filters and perhaps the ability to copy text from the reviews. Don't know whether it's just on my app, but when I write a comment the text is barely visible as I'm entering it, OK when I submit. |
[2013-02-23] A Google User: free version! You have to pay to use th3 search The free version is only a display, no access to the locked bits. It s worth if they say it is a trial version so people don't waste they time. |
[2013-02-20] A Google User: Off putting The amount of this app you get for free is just enough to show you it isn't worth paying for. Amateurish at best, makes me want to turn to drink. |
[2013-02-17] A Google User: Feels like half an app! What is there is good. However needs the facility to tick off, favourite and comment beers and breweries. Just as you can with the pubs. Also needs to have a different colour map pin for a visited pub! |
[2013-02-09] A Google User: Great app, great customer service too! I never had the old version of this app, so have no experience of some of the issues of upgrading from year to year that some people have commented on. I managed to download the app onto my android device ok but then was unable to subscribe as the app "was not supported on my device". However one email to support and a £4.99 paypal payment later, and within 24 hours I am connected. Great customer service I must say, recommended. App is also very good, saves carting a bulky GBG around with you. Only downside is that like every other location based app it drains the battery. Solution on my phone is to always have a spare battery with me, but for people with i-phones and the like this isn't an option. |
[2013-02-02] A Google User: Switch to subscription..... Shoddy treatment of people who bought the app in good faith...... |
[2013-02-01] A Google User: An insult One of the worst free apps I've ever installed, almost everything is locked. OK, keep premium features locked for the pay version, but not being able to view pubs is just a joke. Uninstalled immediately. |
[2013-01-30] A Google User: Free app is not very useful! The free version of the app offers very little. Search is disabled, all it does is show you the pubs near your current location - and it is not very good at getting that! (more often than not, it just comes up with a message saying your location cannot be determined). You can view the pubs it finds on a map, but you cannot access any details about them. |
[2013-01-28] A Google User: Pointless Why offer 'taster' mode? As you can't do anything useful with the app, how does anyone know whether its worth paying a subscription for? Poor dev work means they won't be getting a sub from me |
[2013-01-27] A Google User: Bloody annoyed to say the least Paid for the app and now find it locked unless I pay again. A member of the campaign 35 years, I am quite disgusted. So cross am I that I will cancel my direct debit for the paper GBG thay I have bought every year since 1979 |
[2013-01-20] A Google User: Ruined Change to subscription unacceptable especially from a consumer group. It is poor design that the app updates and wipes out all your visits and notes especially when the whole point of it is to record pub visits. I expected better of Camra than to change to subscription in this way. Shoddy indeed. |
[2013-01-20] A Google User: Rip off 100 days use for a fiver. Not really a good deal is it. Sadly reminiscent of Big Brewers who CAMRA condemn. Should have been like the book book. Don't want a new edition, don't buy on. But at least allow us to keep the old edition. After all we did pay for it... |
[2013-01-20] A Google User: Rip off I already pay for CAMRA membership and for a paper version of the GBG for browsing at home, another fiver just to search on my phone is unacceptable. I'll stick to Google and beerintheevening. |
[2013-01-20] A Google User: Misguided beer guide Without wishing to repeat every other protest about this woeful app I just want to know why the organisation we've all supported for many years has suddenly lurched into the world of grubby commercialism. Maybe CAMRA have no place now and the battle to preserve our brewing heritage has been won. The decision to grab as much money as possible through an annual subscription to this app is crass and needs urgent review. Have cancelled my membership and will not return. There are now more deserving causes. |
[2013-01-19] A Google User: Pretty good |
[2013-01-18] A Google User: Disappointment Enough others have said it too: as a paid up CAMRA member I expect to have to tap in my membership number once to get access to all the app's features, fair enough charge non-members. Makes the organization look mean :-( |
[2013-01-17] A Google User: Absolute disgrace I have been a CAMRA member for over 25 years. Bought the App last year. It was quite good, and far better than carrying a book around. Now they have put me into 'Taster Mode'. The App is now useless. As others have said, if you bought the 2012 CAMRA Guide book, you would still have it. Similarly, when I bought the App, I thought it was my 2012 Guide to keep. CAMRA have changed the rules and snatched it back. I would not have bought it in the first place if I had known this. I will not be buying either version of the Guide ever again. What shocks me most is that this behaviour is from a leading consumer rights organisation. I am now embarrassed to be a member of it. I have tried to leave a Rating of zero stars but one star is the minimum; zero is what it deserves. |
[2013-01-11] A Google User: Useless Speaking as a CAMRA member I am very disappointed with this app. Nothing is accessible in the free version. It didn't even find the beer pub I was sitting in. Sorry, not paying for an incomplete list of pubs - there are many better options for that. |
[2013-01-03] A Google User: Harry Keeps asking for a subscription not for me uninstalling |
[2012-12-29] A Google User: Great pub finding tool! Great to find those out of the way pubs on my travels. This and the Quizfinder app is the most useful two apps to find them. |
[2012-12-27] A Google User: Doesn't work on Nexus 10 tablet Complains of lack of space, but there is 11GB of free space. Works OK on my HTC Desire, but this is not the app it was (before the controversial re-write). |
[2012-12-22] A Google User: So so Really requires a data connection to be useful at all. Can not search by tag (for example accommodation). No way to use offline maps. I'm not certain it's worth paying for as the only real useful feature (find pubs nearest me) is included in the free version. I am very unlikely to resubscribe without significant feature additions. |
[2012-12-16] A Google User: Messing about Too many silly changes. Give me back the direction arrows Integrate with downloaded Google maps Include breweries with a different colour |
[2012-12-07] A Google User: I feel cheated. I'm not happy that I paid for the 2012 version of the GBG but can no longer use it due to this change to subscriptions. I should have bought the physical book, because they wouldn't have been able to take that off me. I want a refund! |
[2012-11-28] A Google User: I'm a camra member. This this eats battery and generally fails to load or find my "license". Better off googling. |
[2012-11-28] A Google User: Useful, with serious caveats Very useful for lovers of ale and pubs. Best used in conjunction with, say Beerintheevening to find other decent pubs, not in the GBG. Docked stars recently, though as the 'find directions' doesn't work and the upgrade to 2013 has lost all my 'visited' ticks from 2012. Also ypu no longer get a useful wiggling arrow that previously showed you the way to a chosen pub. |
[2012-11-20] A Google User: Updating should NOT make you're app useless unless you pay! I only bought the last version a few months ago and liked it a lot despite a few bugs. I now can't use it at all unless I buy it again! If you want to charge for an update and make it subscription based, make it obvious. Yes it is a cheaper way to get the GBG but it costs nothing to distribute, if I'd bought the book is still have access to it, I bought the app now I can't use it unless I buy it again and pay every year. Rip off of the first order. Considering canceling my camera subscription, I don't even like the crap they send me, would rather just have the app and pub discount. |
[2012-11-20] A Google User: Conned into a yearly subscription No mention when i purchased app that it was an annual fee. Very bad customer experience |
[2012-11-17] A Google User: DISGRACE!!!! I don't expect an app that I've paid for suddenly become a subscription app! Needless to say that CAMRA can whistle if they think I'm going to renew my membership. |
[2012-11-16] A Google User: Gbg app BORING. |
[2012-11-15] A Google User: Poor Can't believe my favourites and pubs visited have been removed during the update, it can't be hard to keep them as it remembers my search. Also gps now doesn't work. Not happy! |
[2012-11-12] A Google User: No reply to support emails Emailed support since my account got locked out on phone upgrade and password recovery didn't work. No reply; very disappointing. Avoid |
[2012-11-10] A Google User: Rubbish Can't do anything worthwhile without subscription & trial is pointless. |
[2012-11-08] A Google User: All downhill Used to love this app but it no longer points you in the direction of pubs using GPS, and the devs no longer reply to your emails. I don't think I'll be renewing, which is a shame. Now an embarrassment to CAMRA. |
[2012-11-06] A Google User: Seems to work alright Just downloaded this the other day and not encountered any trouble with it so far. User interface is clear and the whole thing seems pretty quick imo. |
[2012-11-05] A Google User: Underachiever It's a cheap way to get a GBG, but a poor app. Map integration is woeful: just nameless red pins on Google Maps and a green pin for your own position. Can't we get names on the map? Can't we get a link into navigation? |
[2012-11-04] A Google User: Beer Ditto lost my subscription on update . |
[2012-11-01] A Google User: Good beer guide A useful app. But alot of bugs compared to 2012 version. |
[2012-10-29] A Google User: Underhanded so-called 'upgrade' Agree with all comments about the cheat pulled on existing users. CAMRA should not be allowed to change the rules of an existing contract to suit themselves! |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Sadly, avoid now Reduced from four stars because of the sneaky change to a subscription and because the update deleted my record of visiting the pubs. |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Beer finder Excellant for budding ale aficionados |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Canarytops Don't really understand the negative comments re subscription. Do people really expect to get the GBG for free? This app presents GBG info in a different way, there are even eBook versions of the GBG for those who prefer, but once again expect to pay the going rate? |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Thanks for maps fix |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Time to sack the devs! Latest update has added a shiny front end but broken the app. Maps integration knackered, force closes. CAMRA deserves better! |
[2012-10-27] A Google User: Problem... Latest update wiped my visited pubs and favorites. Now requires subscription - the app I bought didn't! Won't re subscribe next year... |
[2012-10-23] A Google User: Not free The free version is useless. Don't bother. |
[2012-10-23] A Google User: Upgrade Mon The upgrade switching you to a subscription service is nothing but s con! Very sad when you can longer trust an organisation such as CAMERA |
[2012-10-21] A Google User: Awful Disappointed to see such a shocking app from camra. Hopefully fix it soon |
[2012-10-19] A Google User: Rip off Have bought this for both android and iOS over the last couple of years, and now they want me to pay a subscription? Outrageous. Do not buy unless you're a fan of random charging changes and wasting money. Disgraceful. |
[2012-10-18] A Google User: New subscription model fails A daily subscription model is terrible for a product like this the previous version with a year of information worked well, and I would be happy to pay for this year's updates but when I want and for a reasonable cost. The ongoing subscription is too limited and inflexible. Please rethink. |
[2012-10-18] A Google User: What is the point? This app no longer seems to do anything useful at all. Save your space! Leave it alone! |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Reverted to old version New version consumes far too much data memory which cannot be moved to sdcard (HTC Desire). I have therefore reverted back to 2012 version. |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Great Perfect when you're out and about and looking for a pub! |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Stealth switch to subscription Have been using the app happily for a year. Sudden switch to a subscription is not an "upgrade". Am a CAMRA member and no mention of this change through official channels. I want my old version back, if you want to play subscription submit it as a new app. |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Unable to view aby pubs near me without getting the paid upgrade. This is freemium done the wrong way. |
[2012-10-16] A Google User: Doesn't work After paying now no use. Support minimal and useless |
[2012-10-14] A Google User: Only middling The fact that you lose all your notes and records of pubs visited when upgrading to a new version is completely unforgivable. The fact that you can't search on a beer to find what brewery it comes from (like the beers index in the paper GBG) is also poor and could be easily added. That said, it does list all the GBG pubs and help locate those closest - useful when travelling. |
[2012-10-14] A Google User: Don't update ...unless you want to lose access to last year's app and have to pay again for next year's! Only updated so I could bump my review to the latest version; will be restoring backup of the one I paid for. |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Bad update Deleted my guide with up date ..boooo |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Great little application Great application for all real ale drinkers. Handy to find a good pub when you're out for the day and to quickly find information about beers and breweries. Also keeps a record of pubs you have visited. Recommended. |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: GBG 2013 frustrating, please fix Terrible version of GBG, cannot open it,error message saying its stopped running, even after latest update. |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Good, but no where near complete A good idea and the best app there is for real ale and this app is missing a user submissions option. Many pubs used by CAMRA members are simply not on there! |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Update loses your subscription Latest update (13-Oct-2012) has lost my subscription and won't let me login. |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Invaluable! Simple to use. Points me straight to my nearest good beer guide pub wherever I am in the country. Brilliant! |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: OK if you don't know pubs in area. It used to be the beer drinkers Bible now it's just one of several apps such as ratebeer. Worth buying nontheless |
[2012-10-12] A Google User: Not worth it Wasn't upgraded automatically. Not worth the hassle trying to get it sorted as I rarely use the app. Doesn't CAMRA have enough of my money already? |
[2012-10-12] A Google User: Poor Didn't expect that reinstalling this app after a phone rebuild would cause me to loose the guide I had purchased. Expected to keep the older guide forever considering I paid for it. Very bad form, and I'm even a camera member. |
[2012-10-12] A Google User: Unimpressed with the "upgrade" Bought the app last year, used occasionally, but worth the £5 for the few times I used it. Was under the impression however I had bought the app. Just been "upgraded" to the subscription version, which means I get 3 months of the information i thought i had already paid for, then have to pay £5 per year. Not worth the money, avoid |
[2012-10-11] A Google User: Crap 0 stars it doesn't work. |
[2012-10-11] A Google User: Total rip off This was a great app until the update changed it to a free title and removed all the features I've already paid £5 for. Total disrespect for your customers. If you wanted to make this change you should have released a new app rather than screw over your existing users. |
[2012-10-10] A Google User: Aaaaah! Keeps crashing since automatic update! Extremely annoying! |
[2012-10-10] A Google User: New = better? Good information. Would rather it was a new app, thereby allowing you to still access & view 2012 edition. Subscription cost of £4.99 seems high considering that information doesn't change enormously year on year. Suggestion that it is an indexed & bookmarked PDF would deal with all these issues. |
[2012-10-10] A Google User: Search does not work offline I thought the new app said that the GBG database would be included within the app, therefore making searches for pubs possible when there is no data connection. This would be wonderful, since I visit the UK from the USA and have no phone service. Upon updating the app on my phone and trying to search offline by city, I find that this does not work. I would love to search offline by city name. I can search offline for the name of a certain pub, but this is not that helpful. Please fix this issue! |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: Crashes phone Worked for one day, then will only crash. Not sure whether it is to do with a memory issue - if it is, I have a feeling it is only going to work on the most modern phones with a large phone memory, despite it saying my HTC Desire is compatible with it. |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: Yearly subscriptions I've paid once for this app but since upgrade it has crashed repeatedly. I think my paid app has reverted to the free version. If I pay it should be for 12 months regardless of when new editions are released! |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: BETA version This app is clearly in Beta mode at the moment. Following the "upgrade" I have had trouble getting it to work on my HTC Desire (which is a rubbish phone anyway). I'm presently in discussions with the support team. So DON'T BUY THIS APP until all the bugs have been sorted and it is fit for purpose and fit for release. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Update Changes the Fundamental Model The update takes you from a guide that was a point in time (and which I might have used for 18 months) to a subscription model. I'm cross as well that we've lost "unique interior" markers as well. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Frustrating beyond belief Had the automatic upgrade but it wouldn't load, so I uninstalled/re-installed it, so lost my automatic subscription. Finally got it to load, but the registration process won't work connection error)leaving me with the taster app. Useless. As an active long-standing CAMRA member I expect better - someone really needs to get to grips with this. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: appalling update I only got the original App on 01/10/12 and enjoyed its handy, ease of use. It worked fine without wi-fi. Then, out of the blue, a subscription update only 4 days later with not so much as a by your leave! Only after countless emails was i able to access my year's "free" subscription. It now keeps crashing, it refuses to search for a location and only seems to work when you are sitting on a Wi-Fi router! CAMRA need to get this & the numpties who crested this fiasco sorted. Very poor & frustrating. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Rubbish This just fails Everytime I open it. |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Bad update - loss of paid version! Previously had the paid for version of the CAMRA guide. After this update I have been demoted to the taster version, and cannot get to the full version without paying £4.99 for a subscription. The registration process did not recognise my Google play email address that the previous version was made on. Pretty bad for an app that costs so much. I expect more. |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Buy the upgrade Well worth it! |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Brilliant! At last, I have the Bible in my pocket all the time. All the great features of the GBG on my phone at under half the cost and always up to date. Search and map features are excellent and work well. I for one, will not mind paying the yearly subscription fee. |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Re-rated Having finally sorted registration happy to give a higher rating. Not full marks as updating should not be so complicated. Yes you have to pay each year but you do for the book so why would the mobile app be different |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Unwelcome 'update' The guide is excellent but this latest update amounts to disgraceful behaviour by CAMRA, Greenius or whoever is responsible. The changeover from a paid for app to an in-app subscription, without the option to keep the status quo is shoddy practice, and quite possibly illegal. I was planning on keeping the 2012 guide for a year at least before updating: just what I used to do with the book version; however, now I am faced with having to fork out for a subscription or no longer have access to something I have paid for. This was not sold as a time-limited product, and I intend to raise this issue with all parties concerned, along with Trading Standards. Not Happy. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Update Not imposed with update... Bought the 2012, did not expect to be updated and was happy with that app. Now I have a new version with 12 months free subscription then by the looks of it I will have to pay a yearly subscription to use it... Not what I bought. Plus it keeps crashing. Not happy Camra. Please sport it out. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Dire. Don't bother. Ruined a useful app with this paid subscription rubbish. Lost access to my bought copy due to forced update. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Still awful This is by far the worst app I've had, after three updates since update still does not work properly. Please sort it out. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Update Don't like change to subscription model. Also wiped all visited pubs and comments. Very poor. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: DO NOT UPGRADE! CAMRA seem to think it is okay to remove features you have paid for unless you pay for them again. Unacceptable. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Highlight open pubs It's a nice app, very clean and tidy interface. It would be great if it would show pubs that are currently open in a different colour from those that are closed on the map. This would be a great feature to locate pubs that are still open if you fancy a drink after 11pm. See Starbucks app for good example. I appreciate the free first year subscription but I wouldn't have bought it if I'd have known it would switch to a yearly subscription service at £5 a pop. Nice app though. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Useless As with the guide, seasonal and occasional beers are missing and you have to go to the website. Useless if you don't remember the name of a weirdly named beer or brewery. Can also only use at home or in a pub (tablet). This is with the activated version. Taster is a waste of time. This would be better as an eBook or PDF. Make the paper guide smaller (less wide), and split it into two... |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Error in registration process Tells me I have 111 days of subscription left so knows who I am but requires registration too and that process delivers an error so now app is next to useless... |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: What have they done EVERY RECENT UPDATE MAKES IT WORSE. CONSTANT FORCE CLOSE. |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Needs fixing Crashes everytime you try to view facilities of a pub. |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Trouble at first but great support Upgraded from GBG2012 mobile app. At first I couldn't register the new app so I fired off an email to the support team via the app itself. Had a reply within an hour giving some suggestions. One of which was to try and register using wifi rather than over 3G. This worked and I can now use all the facilities. Great support - thanks |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Very useful. Great app. A must have as is the GBG on the go. Works great and I like the subscription method. |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: So disappointing Having paid for the app a few weeks ago, and was enjoying it, an update has disabled all the features. I'm stuck in taster mode. Absolutely awful behaviour for any, let alone an expensive application. |
