BillionGraves Camera App (v. 2.2.2) Разработано AppTime |
As I delve into my family history, I celebrate every ancestor I find, and every record or scrap of information I can locate. But over and over, I run into roadblocks. Anyone who really digs for their family roots knows what that feels like. All these records and snippets of history I’m trying to find are out there, somewhere. But all too often I don’t know where to find it, or I can’t find it because I can’t travel to wherever my ancestors were born, lived, or died. But I realized something: every record is near somebody, even if that somebody isn’t me. As far as headstones and graves go, someone out there lives next to the cemetery I need. And who knows, maybe the cemetery they need to search through is the one in my home town.
So my friends and I started work on BillionGraves.com. In building the site and its iPhone and now Android apps, we’ve created a framework that allows people all over the world to map out photos of all the headstones in their local cemeteries and upload them to the BillionGraves.com database. Once the photos are there, fellow family historians can transcribe the information from the headstones and make it easy to search, which puts unique headstone records only mouse-clicks away from anyone looking for their ancestors. By using the smartphone's location services, we can ensure that even when descendants are half a world away, they can not only see their ancestors’ information, but they can also see the headstones and precisely where those headstones are. Previously undocumented records end up collected in an easy-to-access, free-to-use location, and family historians anywhere can use this framework to build on their existing research.
The trouble is that even though we’ve built this framework, it won’t amount to much unless we have help from all over the world. And by all over the world, I mean if we don’t have help from YOU. We have the audacious goal to accurately acquire, transcribe and share at least one billion grave records, but that can’t happen without others who share that same vision...

[2013-08-19] A Google User: Great idea, but app needs work As soon as I tapped "Take Pictures" my phone froze. I had to remove the battery to reboot. |
[2013-08-15] A Google User: Poor support Many problems with uploading, locked up no help from support. It not work on samsung S4 locks up and you h a ve remove the battrry restart the phone. Support is no hrlp. |
[2013-07-10] A Google User: Locks every time I try to use it. Locks phobe causing me to reboot when I press the Take Picture button. |
[2013-06-27] A Google User: Temporarily Disappointed This app is a GREAT CONCEPT but a huge disappointment. I spent hours in the heat taking photos only to discover they are so pixilated, they are essentially useless. After attempting to review my first photo (which I found to be a cumbersome task) I decided just to proceed recording photos. My HTC One has an outstanding camera. I made sure the lens was clean, the lighting was relatively even and bright, and each photo was in focus. I was extremely irritated to see the results once uploaded. Attempting to read an image in order to transcribe the information is all but futile. Another issue which I found disappointing was the lack of a photo's coordinate information being displayed on the Billion Graves website. That information is important and necessary if a person wants to locate a grave using a hand held GPS. PLEASE fix the app; this is an extremely worthwhile endeavor. |
[2013-06-23] A Google User: Love it! Love this app! Easy to use on my Droid RAZR HD. Only downfall is the quality of the images which can sometimes be blurry. |
[2013-06-21] A Google User: Not useable The app hangs at least every 4th photo taken and corrupts the image in all the others. Those images that are "passable" are so compressed and low quality (even on my 8mp HTC One-X) that most are useless to transcribe from. I've sent a bug report using the sites support system but have yet to receive a reply. |
[2013-05-29] A Google User: Awesome Idea BUT It is getting to the point I don't want to waste my time taking pictures with this app.... Worked pretty good when I had the apple, but now that I have a droid type, well, Just read the stuff below, same problems here as them.. no need to beat a dead horse.. S4 locks when hit camera, Tab2 laughs at you, S3 seem to work and said GPS was excellent, till I got home and most of the graves were out in the street. Errors on 50% of the pictures, telling you to retake it... Waste of a good idea. |
[2013-05-29] A Google User: Works, now, on my 4G LTE, by LG One issue: my phone/camera has the ability to focus on a particular spot by tapping the screen, but the app doesn't so I sometimes get pictures of graves a little out of focus. |
[2013-05-11] A Google User: You are all sick This is a disgusting app cashing in on the dead my wife seen her fathers grave on here and is so upset by it all. what right do you all have to take pictures of other peoples grave stones i hope you are all ashamed of yourselves What has this world come too? Get a life you sados |
[2013-04-22] A Google User: Uninstalled After photographing the whole cemetery, a pop up came on my screen for me to log in before upload. I re-entered my information. The pop up came up again and stayed on my screen even after I closed the app. Had to uninstall the app to get the pop up off my screen. |
[2013-04-01] A Google User: Meh It's okay if you know what to do when it locks up. It looked up on my about halfway through a survey. Fortunately, I had an app killer on my phone, which many people don't. When the program locked up, I manually killed the app and restarted it. Apparently, it knew I wasn't fooling around and worked fine for the rest of the survey. Sad to have to do a workaround, but apparently the company isn't terribly interested in a fix. |
[2013-01-22] A Google User: Casillas Great |
[2013-01-06] A Google User: UNINSTALLED!! What a cool idea, but it would not upload my photos... I tried numerous times, but kept receiving "YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN WITH A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS....". I obviously WAS logged in because the Dashboard had the actual number of photos that I had transcribed. Will delete my account online, also, since I am unable to contribute photos. :( |
[2013-01-05] A Google User: BILLIONGRAVED Will not upload photos. It says I am not logged in. |
[2012-11-28] A Google User: Poor app The idea is perfect however rarely can you actually shoot a photo because it needs excellent gps reception. Whoever actually makes a good working app that does gps tagging will put billion graves and find a grave out of business. |
[2012-10-04] A Google User: Issues App has serious issues. Will not let me upload images and instead flashes message that I must first sign in with valid email which I have done over and over. When I quit the app it still flashes the message. Am deleting and unfortunately the hundreds of photos and hours wasted taking them will be all for nothing |
[2012-09-05] A Google User: Cool, but has a few bugs. This app is cool, but often fails to recognize that I tap the screen, requiring multiple taps. Also, some uploaded pics are locked as un-delete-able. They force choose the app. |
[2012-08-26] A Google User: After sending 3 emails to support I was told by support their android ap doesn't work. Local historical society won't use ap. Fix & we'll try again |
[2012-08-18] A Google User: took it out to a cemetery, took 5 pictures, then "GPS signal not good enough ". Kept erroring out and poof...no pictures |
[2012-08-07] A Google User: Works perfectly Best interactive app for taphophiles! After 1 week trial I say: Technology at it's best. |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: Good App GPS works fine on Samsung Galaxy S3. No cost to use if u contribute, if u don't contribute then u should pay to access other's hard work. |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: Junk As part of a recent Boyscout Eagle project I spent about 2 hours taking photos of head stones came home and then tried for hours to up load all 225 of them only to be plagued with app errors. What a monumental waste. Simply put this app is a piece of junk. Now I have to repeat the process again. Thanks!!!!! |
[2012-07-04] A Google User: Billion graves Awsom I will use this. All the time!!!!!! |
[2012-06-30] A Google User: Much more R&D needed. Also Greedy Android 2.3.6 App guide for Android phones is erred in almost every scenario vs. my phone. The GPS coordination is terrible. My phone said GPS signal was GREAT Yet it put pointers out on the main highway instead of the cemetery. Then the idea that I can't see the info per pin on my phone is rediculous. I will not pay for something I contributed. Will be uninstalling EVERYTHING, including pictures I took. BTW this was being evaluated for my genealogical society. Unfortunately I will have to give them a negative report and we will use another method. |
[2012-05-31] A Google User: Great app I love this app |
[2012-05-30] A Google User: Great when it works, frustrating when it doesn't. Your android instructions need to be more encompassing. |
[2012-05-27] A Google User: Brilliant Well made app and brilliant idea! |
[2012-05-26] A Google User: Great idea Needs fine tuning |
[2012-05-25] A Google User: Very cool |
[2012-05-24] A Google User: Took twenty pictures, no more hangs. Seems ok now. Need to go to a cemetery and try it out again. |
[2012-05-24] A Google User: No more lock ups! This used to be terrible, no more lock ups. Status bar stays up while taking pictures. Good on my flyer and droid 2. |
[2012-05-16] A Google User: One glitch fixed on my Galaxy tab Thanks. |
[2012-05-04] A Google User: Exit should do just that Exit app, it stays open in the background accessing GPS. No details of how to access records when looking at a cemetery. |
[2012-04-26] A Google User: Like |
[2012-04-21] A Google User: Fun fun Many users complain about fees... but when I contribute I don't have to pay. People who just want to use it for their own gain should pay for our work. It would be nice if you could transcribe in the app for headstones that are really worn. |
[2012-04-20] A Google User: Too many permissions There are too many permissions for this app. Why the need to check phone status? |
[2012-04-18] A Google User: Unlocking features Paid features are unlocked if/when you contribute. If you don't contribute, you can *optionally* pay to unlock the "records" feature. What part of this is complicated? |
[2012-04-14] A Google User: Ugh I can't believe they charge you but this is easily remedied by searching through your phones internet browser via their website. This makes it free, though a hassle. Good idea |
[2012-04-01] A Google User: You want me to you for my time ? Your dreaming..... Give us a free search for each grave we upload.... |
[2012-03-23] A Google User: Scam Really? We contribute to your database & you charge us for our efforts? What's next? You gonna sell us some Amway? |
[2012-03-15] A Google User: Wow! Amazing idea done so well! BillionGraves is such a cool idea: taking GPS tagged pictures of headstones, transcribing them, then making them accessible to everyone on their website for free! |
[2012-03-13] A Google User: unethical I won't use this app simply because it is unethical to charge for it without compensation for contributing. It reeks of greed when there are already ads in the app. get rid of the cost and clean up the app a bit I.e. make it easier to search for a cemetary by adding filtering by state etc. And this could be a legit project. This shouldn't qualify for eagle projects either because of its commercial nature. |
[2012-02-24] A Google User: Pay for my work?!?!? Again, why do I have to pay to see what you want me to do for you for free? Uninstalling. I should not have to pay or go somewhere else (your website) to use info I helped create. |
[2012-02-15] A Google User: App is Totally Free This app is totally free to use, and all information can be access for FREE on their website. for the $2.99 you can buy additional features to use in the app (like all other apps) but 100% of the data is found for free online. Go to their website and check it out for yourself. I've been using the app for a few months now and haven't had to spend a penny. Great service and idea! |
[2012-02-01] A Google User: I strongly agree with client statement: "2.99 to use - even though it's your work" I could not have said it better than the previous client stated. Developers want you to input information in which you work hard to gather, (ok, but there are much, much easier things for less) using your time and resources AND charge you for using collective work for which you add to. Hmmm. |
[2012-01-31] A Google User: 2.99 to use - even though its your work I don't mind taking pictures for you or entering transcripts but if I take my time to supply information and photos to you for free then I shouldn't be charged to use the collective information. Now I understand if someone hasn't contributed to the site then by all means charge that individual to use it. But if you are going to charge the people that are doing the work then we should be paid for the work we have done to improve the database. Don't get me wrong I don't want to be paid for my work, but I don't want to be charged for my work either. |
[2012-01-20] A Google User: GPS issue. Works great on HTC desire. Just having gps location issues. Have tried to put in cemetery but gps took over 20 mins to try to find it and still did not. Google found it in seconds. Don't understand the issue it has. In aus if that helps. |
[2012-01-18] A Google User: Great. This is such a great tool. I can take almost 100 pics in about 20 minutes. I like this better than other similar services because every single record has an image! (Droid X) |
[2011-12-02] A Google User: Awesome! Even though it does not work on my phone I have used this app and love it. Yay for genealogy volunteers! |
[2011-11-24] A Google User: With the new update it quit working. I deleted it and then reinstalled with the same result. |
[2011-11-22] A Google User: App force closed a lot in EVO 3d but when I turned off auto focus, auto upload, etc. It worked fine. |

[2011-10-20] A Google User: Great Idea, but its free to provide info, but costs to get info. Hmmm |
[2011-10-20] Leah: I gave it a 1 star because u have to pay $2.99 to search graves and that should have been said b4 downloading so in removing it |
[2011-10-20] Renee: Great Idea, but its free to provide info, but costs to get info. Hmmm |
[2011-10-12] T Family Group: Why do all the 1stars show up first? Support is the most responsive I have found. Cool app, works on my galaxy tab. Running 1.3. |

Definitely a must-have app for anyone searching their family history. The mobile app is easy to use and the website features are getting better each week. Thanks, BillionGraves.com. |
