The Talon family, three branches in all, had settled on North American soil long before the British and the French took it into their heads to feud over it. Three parts of the novel tell the story of each branch, exposing the travels and trials related to exploring and settling a new land, vast as a continent, which later became Canada. Jean George Talon decided to depart his home village to escape death punishment. There had already been a murder for which suspicion has been cast upon him, plus a violent conflict with a local merchant who had been cheating him and his fellow fishermen. Shannagan, during an arduous and taxing journey into the wilds of New Found Land, befriended a sorry group of outlaws known as the Masterless Men. With benevolence previously unknown to the lad, he finds himself with a brand new life and freedom in Boston in the home of Rebecca Talon. Trevallion James Talon had arrived to his home in St. John’s of the New Found Land Isle only to be unjustly arrested. His ship and cargo were impounded. Trevallion deftly escapes to the wild interior where his friends, the Beothuk Indians, assist him. However, they too are attacked and must flee their homeland. Danger and intrigue, romance and pirate encounters bring excitement and adventure to these young men of high spirit and love for freedom and justice.
