Have you ever looked at a food label and not known what some of the ingredients were? Shopping was easy when most food came from farms.  Now, factory-made foods have made chemical additives a significant part of our diet.  Chemical Cuisine, from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, features a searchable and filterable list of food additives, their descriptions, and safety ratings to help you make healthy decisions. Learn about a new additive every time you start up the app on the Home screen.  When CSPI updates or adds new information about a food additive, the Chemical Cuisine app will let you know by displaying a badge on the additive.

-- Over 130 food additives with detailed entries and expert evaluation.
-- No internet connection required to use!
-- Automatically updated anytime you have an internet connection with latest entry updates.

5 stars when barcode scanner added

Screens jumps around. Too late for a refund so I'll keep it as a secondary check. An ability to search by e number also would make this app better.

[2011-05-11] Gregory:
What is in Red Bull? Cannot tell how safe or not. Does not list many items.

Will be even better when it gets more additivess!
[2011-04-22] Josh:
If you want to know what kind of foods you're feeding your body, which you should. Get this! Avoid crap like MSG.

A couple of small issues I love the idea and execution. It takes the database a long time to check/load upon opening, and when using the search bar, the screen width jumps around during typing, often ending up unreadable. Hope these will be addressed. Still highly recommend this!

Ground up bugs in your yogurt? Did you know that "carmine" or "cochineal extract" is actually made from pulverized insect bodies? Do you know which artificial sweeteners are safe (like Splenda) and which you should avoid (like aspartame) are not? If you answered 'no,' you'll likely enjoy this useful app from the respected Center for Science in the Public Interest, the nonprofit publisher of Nutrition Action Healthletter.
