Alexandre Dumas wrote the original version of this book in French in 1847 as a part of a larger version called “The Vicomte de Bragelonne”. According to the legend, The Man in the Iron Mask was a prisoner who was held in a number of jails, including the Bastille and  Pignerol, during the reign of Louis XIV of France.
