Groundhog Day has been observed on the 2nd of February since 1887.
A North American holiday with the largest celebration held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow which signifies that winter will soon end and we will have an early spring. However, if it’s sunny and the groundhog “sees its shadow” and retreats back into the burrow, winter will continue for six more weeks.
Punxsutawney Phil is the most notable groundhog, but there are a few others: Smith Lake Jake, Staten Island Chuck, General Beauregard Lee, Shubenacadie Sam and Wiarton Willie.
