iGeology - Interactive geological mapping of the UK.
iGeology is for anyone who wants to explore their local geology, at street-level scale, virtually anywhere in the UK.
Amateur geologists, walkers and gardeners can look at what’s in their local area, to find out about the rocks at the surface (superficial deposits) or the bedrock beneath.
Search on place names or the postcode where you live, then click on the map and reveal the rocks beneath your feet. iGeology will locate your phone (if GPS is enabled) and zoom to your location.
Drag the person icon onto the map for a 3D view of the geological landscape.
The maps use the British Geological Survey’s national scale (1:625 000) and ‘Landranger’ scale (1:50 000) geological datasets of the United Kingdom (UK).
Map coverage
5% of 1:50000 scale data is unavailable for England, Scotland and Wales.
Only 1:625 000 scale data is available for Northern Ireland.

[2012-08-15] A Google User: Does exactly what it says Great for anybody with any interest in geology or the outdoors in general. At last I know both the type of rock I'm looking at and its age, and in so much detail. It's much easier to use than a geological map, and far more information. Note a 3g or better signal is needed, as the map is detailed. Only problem I've found in my area is that sometimes slate is described as sedimentary rather than metamorphic. They give the correct age when the sedimentary rock was laid down, but it does make that particular rock type a bit confusing. |

[2012-08-09] A Google User: Gallery problem fixed! The latest version doesn't put maps in the Gallery. If after upgrading, any maps from the previous version remain in your Gallery, delete folder /Android/data/org.bgs to get rid of them. |
