Gibberbot: Secure Messaging (v. 0.0.10-RC6) Разработано The Guardian Project |
Gibberbot is a free, open-source SECURE chat client capable of firewall and filter circumvention, surveillance blocking and end-to-end encryption. It works with Google, Facebook, any Jabber or XMPP server, such as OpenFire or eJabberD. To use end-to-end encryption, both people must use an app like Gibberbot, ChatSecure (iOS), Pidgin (Linux/Windows), Adium (Mac) or Jitsi.
Gibberbot can be used with "Orbot: Tor on Android" app to connect to chat server over the Tor Network, in order to get through firewalls and filters to blocked chat services and servers.

[2012-12-29] A Google User: Great app but has bugs Force closes sometimes in the background and shows up twice in the recent apps list. |
[2012-12-16] A Google User: I am uninstalling Gibberbot cos I can't quit it & use it when I want. I don't like apps which constantly run, where I have no control. If you do eventually allow your users to use it when THEY want, i'll reinstall because it's not bad. Ever since I installed it though, my gmail notifications haven't been working either. This is a worry. |
[2012-12-16] A Google User: Works great Straight XMPP client. No fuzz. Just right. |
[2012-12-14] A Google User: Guardian project Seems the guys that make this app/guardian project, do it for the right reasons. Still be really cool for guardian project to make things that are at least usable. gibberbot/ tor browser etc won't function well or even at all. Quick customer service tells me " well...what are YOU doing with YOUR life" as if because they're trying to help i should just be happy...nooo unless your apps/programs etc actually WORK your just making spam that fills our phones with crap. Trying ISN'T ENOUGH! Doing IS! |
[2012-12-09] A Google User: Great product |
[2012-12-08] A Google User: Privacy essential, but glitches occasionally. Random fits of black flashes on my 4.2.1 Nexus 7. |
[2012-12-06] A Google User: Great idea I really hope this app gets better. I works sometimes. Other times it just flashes the screen nonstop. This is on a Galaxy Nexus with Jellybean. |
[2012-11-26] A Google User: Jelly Bean 4.2 =BROKEN= It was amazing until the last OS update. Now, the gibberbot screen flickers like crazy everytime you return to the screen after minimizing it to background (update: now I realized that it flickers by just going back to the account list after entering a chat screen...). Also I found that there is some usability problem. Although it connects with orbot, it fails to send messages. Mind you, everything used to work flawlessly before updating to 4.2. Please do a revision of the app, and make it fully compatible. |
[2012-11-09] A Google User: Nice initiative but doesn't work and doesn't get any updates [SGS2] |
[2012-11-06] A Google User: Para salir ir a cuentas - salir y no da mas notificaciones. Genial. Permite conversaciones cifradas y autentificadas. Gracias a Pidgin y OTR tambien puedes utilizarlo con usuarios de win/linux/mac |
[2012-11-05] A Google User: Still doesn't work reliable On cm7. Signs me in, but all contacts are missing. After a while contacts show up but offline messages are lost. Then I exit the app by accident with the back key and on next app start the account is gone and I have to reenter everything... Much work needed! |
[2012-11-04] A Google User: Great Everyone should have it... |
[2012-11-03] A Google User: excellent thank u :D You really listen to customer feed back awesome and appreciated. Also Thanks for fighting for our right to privacy |
[2012-11-03] A Google User: Nice It works vary well |
[2012-10-30] A Google User: Please don't make yourself primary chat client It absolutely needs an option to only start when asked. I only want to use it when I need OTR on my mobile. Now every non-otr message I get results in a notification from gibberbot, even after killing it. |
[2012-10-30] A Google User: work it not letting me log in |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Ui Needs a better UI, use some android 4.0 standards |
[2012-10-25] A Google User: SCH-S950c CH-S950c aka "Samsung Galaxy S Showcase" (Wakmart + Straightalk) This phone is selling like mad, great monthly fee & services. Yet, Google and not much in the Gaurdian devs bloggosphere! Using Gibberbot well enough to test on unrooted phone (due to hesitant users not understanding the importance of anonymity.) |
[2012-10-15] A Google User: Great Keep up the good work! |
[2012-10-14] A Google User: When I updated gibberbot I got dissapoint because as my phone screen is little the menu of gibberbot doesn't allow me to see much of the conversation. I found this very uncomfortable and I would like to have the old gibberbot. My phone is samsung galaxy pro b5510. If someone can tell me how to fix this problem or get the old gibberbot I would be very glad. |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Works well At first I thought it didn't work but then I just had to spend a little time to understand the user interface. Even works to log into Facebook chat. |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: Won't quit Great with OTR but not good that you would have to kill it manually as quit does not work... |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: DOES NOT WORK WITH GOOGLE After trying to sign into my Google account with a password I knew was right, I ended up changing my password twice to try to get this highly flawed app to sign in. This app is riddled with several other annoying bugs and should be labeled as a beta. This app is no where near ready for commercial release! |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Great update! The new release addresses most of the issues that were bugging me before and the new look is shiny! |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Latest update The old version seemed to suck battery like there was no tomorrow. Let's hope this version fares better in that department, especially with the "heartbeat interval" setting. Wish there was a way to make the message boxes black with white text like the rest of the interface. |
[2012-10-04] A Google User: Gibber Great app having no problems with this |
[2012-10-01] A Google User: Swagger Beast app love it!!! |
[2012-10-01] A Google User: Solid security |
[2012-09-27] A Google User: Crashes This app ruins in the background and crashes if TOR isn't running causing much frustration. |
[2012-09-21] A Google User: Great but Needs resource selection GUI. I'm hoping it will play will with libotr4 |
[2012-09-21] A Google User: 5 only 5only ************ ************ |
[2012-09-06] A Google User: Outstanding open source app Great to chat on Google talk and Facebook |
[2012-09-03] A Google User: not working able to login and show contacts but failed to send a message. displayed sent on android but no signs of deliver. |
[2012-08-22] A Google User: It's untrastable adroid all download. |
[2012-08-19] A Google User: To all the complainers..... This is a modified version of Google talk... Google talk on android phones is the back-end for syncing all Google services, and is consequently always signed in. This is the downside of using the Google talk source code to make this app. The official version can sync data and be signed out, this is an older and modified version and won't work the same way, especially considering the core messaging functionality has been altered. |
[2012-08-14] A Google User: Not working Is not even connecting |
[2012-08-08] A Google User: Confused This app could not be more irritating. Back and forth texting is so difficult. You miss messages ALOT due to automatic log offs? At the end of a conversation using this app, you're bound to be confused. |
[2012-07-28] A Google User: Good work so far... I'm fine if I lose a message or two rather than have them sent unencrypted. I would like to see an option to disable auto start. And maybe swipe between conversations and the ability to return to the contact list in a less runabout way. But otherwise thanks for bringing otr to android. The guy who says your pidgin spits out errors....log out of your mobile. You can only be logged into one device at a time while in otr mode. Also how about a donate version ? Thought there was one before. |
[2012-07-26] A Google User: Would be nice if.. ..if you can add an option for renaming the accounts, because if your username is the same on multiple places it gets messy amd hard to open the desired one. |
[2012-07-26] A Google User: Autorestart This app is broken, be warned. As the previous review stated, You choose the 'quit' option to shut down the app. Gibberbot then restarts on it's own, later, causing you to miss messages and not know when you're logged in or not. I can replicate this behaviour on my Galaxy Note and Nexus 7, and have been seeing this issue since I first tried the program a couple of months ago. If you use this, be prepared for it to auto signin even after you've quit, and the you'll receive messages to your phone not your computer when you're not expecting it. I wish this was not a big issue because otherwise this is an amazing app, but rendered unusable due to this fault. |
[2012-07-15] A Google User: Much needed app for android Recommended for safe and encrypted chats. To be used along with Orbot |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: not bad brrr |
[2012-07-10] A Google User: Well worth it This app truly is OTR!!!! |
[2012-07-01] A Google User: Pretty cool, but still buggy Client strips all XML tags, so I do not get anything between < and >. Also, when I sign in with pidgin (with OTR) on my Computer I get loads of OTR error messages. |
[2012-06-30] A Google User: always running? Gibberbot has come up as always running as a foreground app even when I haven't started it. It is not my main messenger ...I only use it when I need OTR ... is it possible to have it run only if it has been started manually? |
[2012-06-27] A Google User: Gibberbot is missing visible timestamps which Beem has Also xmmp priority cannot be changed like in Beem. Both support OTR but neither support group chat nor mpotr. I see Beem better otr-capable client for now. |
[2012-06-27] A Google User: Love OTR support but don't love auto restart This app has caused me to miss messages. After choosing "quit", the application quits, but restarts later and automatically signs me in. Certain messages were received on the phone rather than on my desktop client. Uninstalling. I will revisit this app if it doesn't auto restart and/or allows you to disable auto-sign in. Another annoyance was that if you have more than one account, the conversation and buddy lists are separated. They should be in unified lists. |
[2012-06-24] A Google User: Fitst with OTR, excellence in app They did all this since last review: Now 'Beem' has OTR also. NEEDS multiuser (as Xabber), and the process one XEPs for mobility (TextOne). Resource friendly. NEEDS force/require OTR. |
[2012-06-20] A Google User: Has Potential but fails to send Offline Messages Would love to use this app due to the OTR support, however it still appears to have a serious bug in how it handles Offline Messages. Essentially, it fails to deliver Offline Messages to the target contact at all. The bug is easily reproduced in the following scenario: - [JID:‘Mike’] sends a message to [JID:‘Jen’] who is not currently logged in. - Mike signs out expecting the message to be delivered when Jen signs in.. After Mike has signed out, Jen signs in and gets an audio notification of receiving messages, however: - The notification panel does not reflect receiving these messages - The messages do not show up at all in Gibberbot. They have effectively been lost. The bug seems to apply when you send an offline message to someone and sign off before the target contact signs back on. If you send an offline message to someone who later signs on while you (the sender of the offline message) is still online, then the message would be delivered. |

[2012-06-20] A Google User: Must Have APP Ron Paul 2012 Revolution |
[2012-06-19] A Google User: Double Plus Good |
[2012-06-15] A Google User: Such a great project I love this project. Can't wait to get the free time to contribute to it. The features are full, the UI needs a bit of work, but it's wonderful. |
[2012-06-14] A Google User: Private chatting Thanks, with OTR chatting is now closer to being private. |
[2012-06-09] A Google User: makes end-to-end encryption dead simple Quite amazing. You just enter email and password, tap a person in your buddy list and click "Start Encryption" - and then you have an end-to-end encrypted conversation. I would never have thought it could be that simple and user-friendly. |
[2012-06-09] A Google User: Force close on start always..like it to work will Update---It works but...If I log into into it and then exit I need to restart phone. Sometimes just doesn't connect. I still would like it to work 100% I can use it now just not always still buggy on my phone. Worked fine on GF phone also a HTC just different phone both the same OS. It went up one star for me. Force close on start always..like it to work will Force close on start always..like it to work will try again in a month HTC incredible |
[2012-05-21] A Google User: The eternal TLS certificate notice. There is always some dumb notice telling me about this certificate. What's the point in notices on a phone if it just says ur phone has a notice every moment of every day? U actually managed to ruin the use ability of my entire phone. Please fix!!! Otherwise thanks |
[2012-05-17] A Google User: Really needs multiaccount, defaults This app really needs to be able to handle multiple accounts, and should have a bunch of presets for various popular Jabber servers (such as gtalk or facebook). |
[2012-05-08] A Google User: A security essential Works great on the GS2, this is what every messaging app should have built in as standard. Great work devs. |
[2012-05-06] A Google User: Does not connect; htc flyer Sounds like a real food app for pol that want to use a Messenger with otr capability but unfortunately gibberbot doesnt seem to connect. still hoping for a fix for this though! |
[2012-05-03] A Google User: Works but.. There's something wrong. It notifies me every 5 minutes about which certificate it's using and from which signing authority and expiry dates. Blah blah. No option in settings to turn that off. |
[2012-05-02] A Google User: Great idea Thank you and your volunteers. Hopefully this should at least slow down if not stop a bad hacker problem I have. |
[2012-04-25] A Google User: Works Great Seems working okay for me.. does what it says.. just a little suggestion regarding the UI, specially in the conversation window, can you make it a little nicer or give it some color. But overall, great app! Thanks |
[2012-04-21] A Google User: Extremely Disappointing I realise its in the beta phase still, and that it is an open source project, I will rate 5 stars the second I can even sign in, after the update I cant even sign in for the usual 30 seconds before it kicks me out. I support torproject/gaurdian, this is the first app/program to give me any trouble, sorry for the low rating guys, keep up the good work. |
[2012-04-20] A Google User: An epic start Very nice work here guys, I don't have an account to us it yet, but I'm going to get one soon |
[2012-04-18] A Google User: good idea, poor implementation I like the idea very much, but... 1) I could not make an encrypted connection to gtalk. Some unreadable sequence of characters appeared on the other side instead. 2) This thing logs me out after a while when the phone is sleeping. It may be very safe, but it is also very annoying. Overall: nice concept, but the present implementation makes the thing not usable. I do hope it will improve. |
[2012-04-12] A Google User: Force closes I connect for about 15 seconds, and it disconnects me, then shuts itself off. Not really useful at the moment. |
[2012-03-28] A Google User: Dosent let you sign in |
[2012-03-23] A Google User: Good app, but The new theme for 0.7.1RC is really bad. The text is barely readable in the contact list (white doesn't have a good contrast with light colors) |
[2012-03-05] A Google User: Finally otr! Great to finally find otr support on my phone. I'd love to see multiple account support in the future, and perhaps a shinier UI. |
[2012-03-04] A Google User: Good Please add multiple accounts! |
[2012-02-27] A Google User: Bug fix Ca we get a udate, in sincer its full of bugs |
[2012-02-27] A Google User: Buggy as hell Uninstall. Starts, connecting on its own while force clossing continuously |
[2011-11-30] A Google User: I like it Good |
[2011-11-14] A Google User: OTR on Android! Worth the bugs if you need OTR. Gibberbot definitely needs more work, but it's the only messaging client for Android that supports OTR (Off-The-Record Encryption and Authentication protocols). If you're using another IM client chance are your messages are sent and stored in clear text, your service provider could easily monitor/log your messages, but not with Gibberbot. Thanks to all the devs working on this! I hope it continues to improve. |
[2011-10-28] A Google User: Very buggy! Disconnects silently while you want to use it but reconnects randomly after you closed it by pressing the Quit button. WTF? |
[2011-10-06] A Google User: Buggy but it IS in beta Has a lot of bugs right now (actually worked better on my Galaxy S before the update) but I can't wait for it to be ready. |
[2011-10-04] A Google User: Below average Not only us this app larger than other xmpp clients, its interface is one of the slowest. |
[2011-09-30] A Google User: basic functionality is there 0.0.5-RC5 certainly works and appears to fix the issues with staying connected. Thanks to the devs for their work. I finally have OTR on my mobile. My only ask is to have a way to set different notifications for online/offline than actual IMs. |
[2011-09-27] A Google User: Gibberbot I have been trying to get on Gibberbot from now some time but I am getting only one error. "Unable to sign into the XMPP service. Please try again later. (Detail: Cannot connect to your server. Please check your connection.)" I am running Orbot and it is configured for TOR but this as well as orweb do not work. Motorola OG CM7 RC1 |

[2011-06-03] A Google User: Finally OTR for my phone! However there are no instructions on how to connect to AIM (what server/port to use, etc). Doesn't AIM use XMPP now? |
[2011-06-03] christophocles: Finally OTR for my phone! However there are no instructions on how to connect to AIM (what server/port to use, etc). Doesn't AIM use XMPP now? |
