With Spurs of Gold (v. 1.0)

These brief historical sketches were written primarily for young people, though it is hoped that some older readers may find pleasure in renewing their acquaintance with heroes of chivalry whose names are familiar still, but whose deeds are recalled to mind but vaguely.

It is the purpose of the book to enliven the study of history by giving the romantic details omitted in text-books, and to enable the readers to form a more vivid and lifelike conception of the great men with whom it deals and the turbulent and picturesque times in which they lived.

In the preparation of the book many histories, chronicles, and legends have been consulted, and it is hoped that a fair degree of accuracy has been attained where the narrative belongs to the domain of history.

The stories of Roland and the Cid, of course, are largely legendary, and there is evidently a considerable admixture of fiction in the contemporary accounts of Godfrey and Richard.

Here are the heroes and their stories:

★ This is the Rule for the Gallant Knight
★ A Steed! A Steed!
★ Roland and Oliver
★ The Cid Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar
★ The Cid's Wedding
★ Godfrey and the First Crusade
★ The Troubadour
★ The Carrier Dove
★ The Captive Knight
★ Richard Cœur-de-Lion
★ Richard's Lament
★ The Last Crusader
★ The Chevalier Bayard
★ Sir Philip Sidney
★ Sidney in Tournament

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was not yet 25 when he burst onto the literary scene in London, where his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him an instant celebrity.

Rudyard Kipling was the first English writer to win the Nobel Prize (not the Pulitzer) for literature, in 1907. Kipling is a master of the language. His writing is balanced and fluid.

Born in India in 1865 to an upper-class military family, he spent his early years in Britain and India and achieved his initial success as a reporter in India.

He traveled widely and visited the U.S. a number of times, eventually building a house in Vermont. A restless wanderer, he ultimately settled in Sussex, only to have his world tumble into ruins with the death of his son in World War I.

Kipling is very popular for his adult and children's stories and poems.

Witty, profound, wildly funny, acerbic and occasionally savage, Rudyard Kipling's writings continue to delight readers of all ages.

Here are the chapters included inside the book:

★ An Observation Post
★ The Line that Never Sleeps
★ Farm Life amidst War
★ A City and Woman
★ Trenches
★ Supports and Reserves

The Jungle Book (v. 1.1)

KoolAppz опубликовал приложение 2011-10-08
(обновлено 2011-10-08)

Legends are made from legends. Rudyard Kipling dug deep into the tales of the jungle from his years living in India, and drew from them the kinds of stories that live forever.

The stories tell mostly of Mowgli, an Indian boy who is raised by wolves from infancy and who learns self-sufficiency and wisdom from the jungle animals.

The book describes the social life of the wolf pack and, more fancifully, the justice and natural order of life in the jungle.

Among the animals whose tales are related in the work are Akela the wolf; Baloo the brown bear; Shere Khan, the boastful Bengal tiger who is Mowgli's enemy; Kaa the python; Bagheera the panther; and Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose.

Richly written, with details and contexts unfamiliar to Western readers, "The Jungle Book" lifts imagination and language beautifully. Poetic, and written in a literary style, it shines above most modern prose.

Jungle Book lives and breaths on its own forever.

Here is the preview of the book...

Having experienced five months of this war, I became infected with fever and a strong coldness of the stomach[rupture]. The doctor ordered me out of it altogether.

They have also cut me with knives for a wound on my leg. It is now healed but the strength is gone, and it is very frightened of the ground. I have been in many hospitals for a long time.

At this present I am living in a hospital for Indian troops in a forest-reservation called "New," which was established by a king's order in ages past.

There is no order for my return to India. I do not desire it. My Regiment has now gone out of France-to Egypt, or Africa.

My officer Sahibs are for the most part dead or in hospitals. During a railway journey when two people sit side by side for two hours one feels the absence of the other when he alights.

How great then was my anguish at being severed from my Regiment after thirty-three years! Now, however, I am finished. If I return to India I cannot drill the new men between my two crutches.

I should subsist in my village on my wound-pension among old and young who have never seen war. Here I have great consideration. Though I am useless they are patient with me.

How Shakspere Came to Write (v. 1.1)

Mr. Kipling’s brilliant reconstruction of the genesis of the ‘Tempest’ may remind us how often that play has excited the creative fancy of its readers.

It has given rise to many imitations, adaptations, and sequels.

But apart from such commentaries by poets and philosophers, the poem has lived these many generations in the imaginations of thousands. There, the enchanted island has multiplied and continued its existence.

Shakspere created that land as the possession of each of us. Not far removed, but close to the great continent of our daily routine and drudgery, lies this enchanted island where we may find music and moonlight and feeling, and also fun and mischief and wisdom.

There, in tune with the melody and transfigured as by the charm of moonlight, we may encounter the nonsense of drunken clowns, the mingled greed and romance of primitive man, the elfishness of a child, the beauty of girlhood, and the benign philosophy of old age.

We may leave the city at the close of business, and, if we avoid the snares of Caliban and Trinculo, we may sup with Prospero, Ariel, and Miranda.

How did Shakspere discover this enchanted island?

From what materials did he create the “baseless fabric of this vision”? What had London playhouses to do with these spirits of thin air?

On what books or plays were these dreams made? Out of the issues of rivalry and profit which beset the King’s company of players at the Globe and the Blackfriars, how came this “insubstantial pageant”?

We have been told that the Sonnets are the key with which to unlock Shakspere’s heart; and perhaps if we could answer all these questions we might have the key to his imagination.

I do not believe, however, that his imagination was lockt up. Rather it was open wide to many impulses, hospitable to countless influences.

This apparently is the opinion of Mr. Kipling, who suggests that Shakspere’s “vision was woven from the most prosaic material, from nothing more promising, in fact, than the chatter of a half-tipsy sailor at the theater.”

"From Sea to Sea" consists of letters or travel reports written by Kipling for his newspapers between 1887 and 1889.

They include both letters from journeys within India between November 1887 and February 1888, and from his journey back to England, 'from sea to sea', between March and September 1889.
