    大唐游侠段珪璋与大唐进士史逸如相交莫逆，双方指腹为婚，并以龙凤宝钗为凭。不料，史逸如死于安禄山之手，段珪璋亦在安史之乱的睢阳危城中以身殉国，段珪璋夫人窦线娘也在不久后病死。段子段克邪为大侠南霁云的遗孀夏凌霜所收养，史女史若梅则被安禄山之部将薛嵩收养，改名薛红线。后薛嵩投降唐王朝，官居潞州节度使，薛红线亦成官家小姐，对自身身世并不知情。
　　段克邪十六岁，夏凌霜对其说了其中故事，要克邪持龙钗寻凤钗，成就姻缘。适逢薛嵩为联络魏博节度使田承嗣而将其养女许配于田的大公子。当田家向薛家送聘礼路途之中，恰逢段克邪。聘礼为段及金鸡岭好汉所劫。段为弄清情况，夜闯薛府，谁知薛红线并不知真情，双方大打出手，反目成仇，自此误会重重。薛嵩夫人终对红线言明真情，为报养父母养育之恩，红线夜探田承嗣府，演出一幕“红线盗匣”的传奇故事，谁料克邪也夜探田府，误以为红线前往报讯，误会又增加一重。红线报答了养父母之恩，解了潞州之难，自此恢复了史若梅的身份。并在困境中得幼时好友聂锋之女聂隐娘之助，结识了扶桑岛少主牟世杰，史、聂二女遂同牟世杰上金鸡岭寻找段克邪。
　　其时绿林之中，铁摩勒仁义过人、武功卓绝且出身绿林世家，从而声威大振，绿林豪杰大多拜服。辛天雄等欲将其推上绿林盟主的宝座。牟世杰身负使命来到中原，短短二年间结交豪杰，收买人心，亦已江湖闻名，隐隐可与铁摩勒一论高低。绿林大会上，群雄并起，争夺绿林盟主。其进牟世杰真相未露而颇有侠名，铁摩勒则以君子之心不愿伤了牟之和气同时也为安抚原王伯通系绿林，因而将盟主之位轻易让与牟世杰。金鸡岭被官兵攻破，段克邪与史若梅不但未能消解误会，段反而怀疑史是官兵所派，双方再次动手，史负气远去。经聂隐娘说明，段克邪方知误会了史若梅，对其未婚妻之举产生敬重爱慕之意，孤身踏上寻妻之路。
　　史若梅出走被官兵追杀，为江湖侠士独孤宇所救，在其家养伤。独孤宇之妹独孤莹误认史为男子，不禁有芳心暗许之意。史只好再次出走，远赴长安投奔聂隐娘。段克邪寻妻不成，被史思明之女史朝英所掳，要其合作反唐，而段不为所动。史朝英乃是空空儿之旧日恋人辛芷姑之徒，史朝英对段克邪若嗔若痴，而段克邪变无可奈何。史朝英有尽手段，却发觉段克邪“胸无大志”，而与牟世杰却是气味相投，双方形成亲密伙伴。而段克邪终与史若梅误会冰释，成为爱人。
　　羽林军统领秦襄的英雄大会上，秦受朝中奸臣陷害入狱，赴会的铁摩勒、段克邪、史若梅等陷入困境，幸得空空儿、长乐公主相救脱困，铁摩勒终于手刃杀父仇人羊牧劳。牟世杰为完成造成夺取江山的野心，抛弃了爱侣聂隐娘，联络安史之乱的史家余孽，置铁摩勒、段克邪、聂隐娘等的良言而不顾，一意孤行而越行越远，致使江湖英雄极为不满。经历了各种曲折斗争，牟世杰奸谋败露，大势已去，然而仍不甘心自己的失败，将当时武功天下无敌的叔叔牟沧浪请来中土为靠山，并挑拨牟沧浪与段克邪之关系，牟沧浪出手伤了段克邪，后与空空儿、辛芷姑一战两败俱伤，最终得知了真情而懊悔不已。
　　英雄会上，牟世杰众叛亲离，几度挣扎而最终自杀身亡，铁摩勒成为新的绿林盟主。段克邪却被史朝英所俘。其时史朝英知大势已去，为保腹所怀牟世杰的胎儿，因而将段克邪作为护身之符，避居于西土鄂克沁寺中，历时七个多月，群雄四处寻找。史若梅在明白真相后，万里寻夫，在几位武林前辈的帮助之下，经历了无数坎坷，终于找到了鄂克沁寺，帮助其找败回纥入侵之敌，找到段克邪，其时史朝英产下一子之后，当场自杀身亡，以赎一生的罪孽。
　　段克邪与史若梅，经历无数坎坷误会之后，龙凤宝钗终于结为百年之好。
