    纳兰明慧与多铎江南杭州大婚前夕，杨云骢潜入将军府，期望明慧和他出走，但明慧不能负累家族，杨一气之下由她手中抢走女儿，在钱塘江畔遭遇仇家纽枯鲁。杨云骢一是心中郁结，二是顾虑自己的女儿宝珠，出手不能施展全力，与纽枯鲁同归于尽。奄奄一息之时，正遇见被“天地会”(铁枪会)女舵主刘郁芳误会叛敌，含冤莫白，正要投江自尽的少年（梁穆郎）。少年看到云骢的痛苦后打消了自杀的念头，杨临终时将女儿托付给穆郎带上天山学艺。 这是楔子。十八年后，“天山神芒”凌未风〔即穆郎〕得晦明禅师真传，名震江湖。他当年带上山的女婴易兰珠（宝珠，“易”是杨的右边，“兰”取自纳兰明慧，“珠”取自宝珠），学成天山剑法，立志杀多铎以报父仇。
　　五台山，群雄聚会，“天地会”(铁枪会)获悉多铎将前来五台山清凉寺礼佛，他们精心部署刺杀计划，却发现轿子中坐着的是鄂王（多铎）的王妃（纳兰明慧），又被半途杀出的易兰珠，坏了大事，更因兰珠的突然倒戈保护鄂王妃而使抗清名将张煌言之子张华昭负伤被擒。与此同时，傅青主和徒弟冒浣莲无意中发现一桩惊人秘密，原来五台山老和尚竟是失踪多年的老皇帝顺治。康熙为保皇位，暗杀亲父。冒浣莲等以此秘密要挟康熙，放群雄下山。
　　易兰珠因自己鲁莽而误大事，心怀歉疚，独往京城营救张华昭。
　　凌未风因易兰珠事件，重会十八年前的恋人刘郁芳，但抵死不承认自己便是穆郎，郁芳很痛苦，此时的未风脸上有刀痕，已经与当年的穆郎有很大的差别，所以郁芳虽然怀疑，倒也不敢确认。二人和天地会副舵主——喜欢郁芳多年的韩志邦共上京城。旅途之中，适逢清廷卫士抢劫西藏佛门圣物“舍利子”，凌未风仗义制止，力败不肖师兄楚昭南，自己亦被大内卫士暗器烧伤。刘郁芳对凌未风关怀备至，韩志邦见此情景，黯然神伤，自行离去，却在失望之中无意学得了上乘武功——达摩心法。
　　在云南境内，凌未风、刘郁芳结识李闯王的后人李思永，会合傅青主与冒浣莲，加上来自昆明的少年桂仲明形成五剑。桂武功奇高，却因自以为杀死生父而神经错乱，由傅青主指点冒浣莲以爱心和耐心将他治愈，两人成为爱侣。
　　易兰珠久无消息。桂仲明、冒浣莲奉命进京探讯。其间，满族大才子纳兰容若被冒浣莲的才学倾倒 。鄂王妃明慧认出兰珠是自己的女儿，恳求多铎不要伤害她，多铎对明慧一往情深，令明慧很感动，也很痛苦。几经周折，热恋张华昭的三格格，为情牺牲自己，使张华昭、易兰珠双双脱险，在生死共患难的遭际之中，张华昭与易兰珠永结同心。
　　其时多铎(多格多)承旨出征，兰珠刺杀多铎，多铎几乎就要杀死兰珠之时想起明慧的嘱托，又见兰珠很想少年的明慧，便不忍心下手，最后死在明慧怀中。然而易兰珠亦被擒而打入天牢。鄂王妃明慧也和兰珠母女相认，但兰珠却对于母亲又爱又恨，终于使明慧在自己的女儿和丈夫中心力交瘁，绝望自尽。临死前和赶来营救兰珠的飞红巾尽释前嫌，结为姐妹。凌未风大闹天牢亦功败垂成。后得飞红巾相助，这才把易兰珠救出。
　　刘郁芳、傅青主等人潜入回疆，群雄聚会，几厉生死，思永和武元英之女、白发魔女弟子武琼瑶相恋。
　　卓一航弟子辛龙子被昭南蛊惑，为虎作伥，但最终悔悟，力战而死，
　　凌未风在恶斗之际，突发痉挛症，被楚昭南所擒。楚昭南为迫使凌未风交出晦明禅师遗下的拳经剑谱，将凌未风关押到西藏布达拉宫之中，百般折磨。凌未风越狱不成，自度将死，便设法带出血书一封，向刘郁芳承认自己便是那“死去”多年的少年穆郎。见刘郁芳悲痛欲绝，韩志邦铤而走险，化妆入宫，说动活佛将已丧失功力的凌未风带出，自己则假扮凌未风模样，留在迷宫之中。后被楚昭南发现，韩志邦不敌身死。傅青主、刘郁芳等率众杀入迷宫，楚昭南终于在易兰珠的剑逼下无奈自杀。
　　天山七剑终于重整旗鼓，由飞红巾、武琼瑶、桂仲明、冒浣莲、易兰珠、张华昭、凌未风组成新七剑和“天山之友”刘郁芳光大天山剑派，仗义行侠，继续着抗清斗争……
