About the Book
The End of Books (La Fin Des Livres) [1894]

In 1895 Octave Uzanne and Albert Robida published, in France, Contes pour les Bibliophiles (Stories for Bibliophiles). We're going to re-publish this as an e-book, taking advantage of the ability of modern technology to reproduce the color and monochrome images in ways that would be prohibitively expensive to duplicate on paper. Here's a sample to get your interest piqued.

The eleven stories in Contes, all revolving around books (or at least printing) are interesting, bizarre, weird... one could go on in true Fanthorpian fashion. But even better than the stories are the illustrations by Albert Robida.

Robida was born in 1848 and died in 1926. During his lifetime he reportedly drew 60,000 pictures and wrote and/or illustrated over 200 books. His first published work came out in 1866, and he appeared in "La Vie Parisienne," as well as journals less well-known to the world outside France. One of his works, La Guerre au XXe Siècle (1887) is of some interest in the field of science-fictional treatments of future wars, and is the subject of current papers and a critical edition by I. F. Clarke in Britain.

Robida is forgotten (or was never known) in America, but in France he is remembered. His sketches and caricatures, particularly of humorous and satirical visions of what lay in the future, were decades ahead of their time. Disney adopted some of his drawings as backgrounds for their views of the future at a pavilion at Epcot, and web sites attempt today to bring some of his best work back into circulation.

About the Author
Octave Uzanne, 1852-1931

French man of letters, bibliophile, editor and journalist. After studying classics, he moved to Paris to devote himself to books. From 1875, he worked at Advisor Bibliophile and then founded successively four journals: Bibliographical Miscellany, The Book, The Book Modern and Art and the Idea. In 1889, with 160 others, he founded a publishing company of French writers, the League of contemporary bibliophiles, later the Society of Independent bibliophiles.

He also published personal works: novels, fantasy books, literature reviews. They are lavishly illustrated editions in small print, produced in collaboration with artists such as Paul Avril and Felicien Rops.

Between two books, Uzanne circumnavigated the world in 1893.

Uzanne worked with Albert Robida on a collection of tales, Contes pour les bibliophiles, which contains the famous story called La Fin des livres (The End of Books).

He spent his last years in his apartment in St. Cloud, always surrounded by books and still writing.

American author and humorist. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has since been called the Great American Novel, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is extensively quoted. During his lifetime, Twain became a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists and European royalty. Twain enjoyed immense public popularity. His keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. American author William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

About the Author
Ivan Turgenev, 1818-1883

Russian novelist and playwright. His novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.

Turgenev first made his name with A Sportsman's Sketches (??????? ????????), also known as Sketches from a Hunter's Album or Notes of a Hunter, a collection of short stories, based on his observations of peasant life and nature. Turgenev himself considered the book to be his most important contribution to Russian literature; and Tolstoy, among others, agreed wholeheartedly, adding that Turgenev's evocations of nature in these stories were unsurpassed.

Fathers and Sons ("???? ? ????"), Turgenev's most famous and enduring novel, appeared in 1862. Its leading character, Bazarov, was in turns heralded and reviled as either a glorification or a parody of the 'new men' of the 1860s. Many radical critics at the time did not take Fathers and Sons seriously; and, after the relative critical failure of his masterpiece, Turgenev was disillusioned and started to write less.

Laurence Sterne, 1713–1768

Novelist, son of an officer in the army, and the great-grandson of an Archbishop of York, was born at Clonmel, where his father’s regiment happened to be stationed, and passed part of his boyhood in Ireland. At the age of 10 he was handed over to a relation, Mr. Sterne of Elvington in Yorkshire, who put him to school at Halifax, and thereafter sent him to Cambridge He entered the Church, a profession for which he was very indifferently fitted, and through family influence procured the living of Sutton, Yorkshire. In 1741 he married a lady — Miss Lumley — whose influence obtained for him in addition an adjacent benefice, and he also became a prebendary of York. It was not until 1760 that the first two vols. of his famous novel, Tristram Shandy, appeared. Its peculiar and original style of humour, its whimsicality, and perhaps also its defiance of conventionality, and even its frequent lapses into indecorum, achieved for it an immediate and immense popularity. Sterne went up to London and became the lion of the day. The third and fourth vols. appeared in 1761, the fifth and sixth in 1762, the seventh and eighth in 1765, and the last in 1767. Meanwhile he had published the Sermons of Mr. Yorick [1760], and his remaining work, The Sentimental Journey appeared in 1768.

Arcus Dictionary Pro (ADs) is a fast English dictionary with 185000+ words, definitions and synonyms available offline.

There are two pro versions, one paid and one supported by ADS. This is the AD supported version.

The pro versions have extra features compared to the basic free version: search web dictionaries, voice search, random word widget, 10,000+ more definitions and sample sentences where available.

It is designed to be easy to use and give you the top and most common results for your query.  All you need to do is start typing to get results instantly.  By default the more probable matches are displayed first although there is an option to display results purely alphabetically too.

The dictionary also supports pronunciations for definitions, a favourites feature, word hyperlinking, sharing and  customisation options.

Permissions and why I need them:

INTERNET: Showing Ads, speech to text and web dictionary lookups

WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Saving data files to the sd card

READ_PHONE_STATE. All this does is to generate an anonymous device id that is used by the ad provider.  It is like a cookie in your browser.
