About the book
Journal of an overland expedition in Australia, from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, a distance of upwards of 3000 miles, during the years 1844-1845

LEICHHARDT, FRIEDRICH WILHELM LUDWIG (1813-1848?), naturalist and explorer, was born on 23 October 1813 at Trebatsch, Prussia, the fourth son and sixth of the eight children of Christian Hieronymus Matthias Leichhardt, farmer and royal inspector of peat, and his wife Charlotte Sophie, née Strählow. Leichhardt was educated at Trebatsch, a boarding school at Zaue, a gymnasium at Cottbus, and at the Universities of Berlin (1831, 1834-36) and Göttingen (1833). At Göttingen friendship with a fellow student, John Nicholson, who had studied medical science, aroused Leichhardt's interest in science, and he turned from his earlier study of philosophy and languages to the natural sciences. Leichhardt pursued knowledge for its own sake and not in preparation for any particular qualification or career; he ceased to follow a prescribed syllabus and no university degree was ever conferred upon him. The practice of addressing Leichhardt as 'Doctor' arose later out of recognition by his contemporaries that he was a man of learning dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.

In 1837 John Nicholson's younger brother William, with whom Leichhardt studied at Berlin, returned to his home at Clifton in Gloucestershire and Leichhardt went with him. Until 1842 these two young men lived frugally on William's small income while they studied medical and natural science at the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Museum and the Jardin des Plantes, and by field observation in England, France, Italy and Switzerland. To enable Leichhardt to fulfil his plan to study the natural sciences in a vast new field William Nicholson paid his fare to Australia, provided clothes and necessities for the journey and gave him £200.

About the Author
Ludwig Leichhardt, 1813-1848

Prussian explorer and naturalist, most famous his exploration of northern and central Australia.

He led three major expeditions to explore parts of northern and central Australia. The first, mounted as a private expedition, started on October 1, 1844 from Jimbour on the Darling Downs and ended after a nearly 4800 km overland journey in Port Essington on December 17, 1845. He returned to Sydney by boat to a hero's welcome. The Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia, from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, a Distance of Upwards of 3000 Miles, During the Years 1844-1845 by Leichhardt describes this expedition.

The second expedition, now with the assistance of a Government grant and substantial private subscriptions, starting in December 1846, was supposed to take him from the Darling Downs to the west coast of Australia and ultimately to the Swan River and Perth. After covering only 800 km the expedition team was forced to return in June 1847 due to heavy rain, malarial fever and famine. After recovering, Leichhardt spent 6 weeks in 1847 to examine the course of the Condamine River and the country between the route of another expedition led by Mitchell in 1846 and his own route, covering nearly 1,000 km.

In March 1848 Leichhardt again set out from the Condamine River to reach the Swan River. He was last seen on April 3 1848 at McPherson's Station, Coogoon on the Darling Downs. His disappearance after moving inland, although investigated by many, remains a mystery.

About the Book
Seven Pillars of Wisdom

Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the monumental work that assured T.E. Lawrence's place in history as "Lawrence of Arabia." Not only a consummate military history, but also a colorful epic and a lyrical exploration of the mind of a great man, this is one of the indisputable classics of 20th century English literature. Line drawings throughout.

Consider the saga of Elmo Zumwalt II, admiral in the U.S. Navy. He was responsible for the decision to spray the controversial and carcinogenic "agent orange" on the banks of the rivers in Vietnam to defoliate them. Many U.S. soldiers were inflicted with cancer as a result. His own son, Elmo Zumwalt III, was among them! Was it then a wise decision? Most strategists believe that many more lives would have been lost had the Vietcong had the cover of the forest to continue sniping at our patrol boats. Even as Elmo III lay dying, he supported his father's decision.

Many believe thousands of lives were saved when President Truman hastened the end of World War II by his decision to drop atomic bombs. Churchill did not warn his people of a known air raid so the Germans would not discover we had broken their code. Many died but we kept a great strategic advantage.

And how often every day are doctors, scientists, leaders, police, judges, and maybe even yourself called upon to make decisions that may have serious, even life and death, effects on one's self or others? How often are people hurt by unwise actions? How often by your or my foolishness?

Foolishness is just lack of wisdom. Conversely we may say that wisdom is knowledge righteously and appropriately applied.

We all exercise good and bad judgments daily, but even our wisest decisions seem to fall short. Our best efforts may mitigate a problem but who has the ability to stop or prevent the problem?

Truly it can be said that the world is wise according to the laws and principles of man. But, I Corinthians 3:19, "the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness." This scripture indicates that the good examples of the wisdom of the world we have seen are, at best, damage control. For who has the perfect wisdom to prevent any or all of the evils of this present day?

We can all agree there is no shortage of wise acres, wise crackers, wise guys, wisenheimers, or sophomores (literally "wise morons"). But where are the "Solomons"?

About the Author
T. E. Lawrence, 1888-1935

Col. Thomas Edward Lawrence (August 16, 1888 - May 18, 1935), also known as Lawrence of Arabia, became famous for his role as a British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918. About the author
Rudyard Kipling

Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English author and poet. Born in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai), he is best known for his works of fiction The Jungle Book [1894] (a collection of stories which includes Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Kim [1901] (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including The Man Who Would Be King [1888]; and his poems, including Mandalay [1890], Gunga Din [1890], and If— [1910]. He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works speak to a versatile and luminous narrative gift.

Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author Henry James said of him: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined.

About the author
William James

Pioneering American psychologist and philosopher. He wrote influential books on the young science of psychology, educational psychology, psychology of religious experience and mysticism, and the philosophy of pragmatism.

James studied medicine, physiology, and biology, and began to teach in those subjects, but was drawn to the scientific study of the human mind at a time when psychology was constituting itself as a science. James's acquaintance with the work of figures like Hermann Helmholtz in Germany and Pierre Janet in France facilitated his introduction of courses in scientific psychology at Harvard University. He taught his first experimental psychology course at Harvard in the 1875-1876 academic year.

About the Book
Simple Italian Cookery [1912]

"Simple Italian Cookery" by Antonia Isola was published in 1912 by Harper & Brothers. It was the first Italian cookbook published in English in the United States. The Italian name of the author, "Antonia Isola," was a pseudonym, chosen by her publisher to help give her collection of Italian recipes credibility. The author's real name was Mabel Earl McGinnis. She was born in 1876 in the United States; as an adult she spent a lot of time in Italy, in particular, in and around the city of Rome. Despite the fact that she is credited as being the very first individual to put together a book of Italian recipes for the American public, she did not publish any other book after her successful debut. To view or download her entire cookbook, "Simple Italian Cookery," which is now in the public domain, visit www.archive.org. Many of the recipes can also be found on this website (See Italy Revisited/"XXX Italian Cookbook by Antonia Isola). Five other copyright-free Italian cookbooks can also be found at "www.archive.org" as well as on this website, "www.Italy Revisited.org." The list includes: "Italian Cooking" by Dorothy Daly (See Italy Revisited/XXX Italian Cookbook by Dorothy Daly), "Leaves from our Tuscan Kitchen," by Ann Janet Ross published in 1900 (See Italy Revisited/ "Italian Cookbooks in the Public Domain"), "Practical Italian Recipes for American Kitchens by Julia Lovejoy Cuniberti (1918), "Allied Cookery," by Harrison and Grace Clerque (1916) and "The Cook's Decameron" by W.G. Waters published in 1920 (See Italy Revisited/"XXX Italian Cookbook by WG

It's unlikely I can do all the recipes in all of the 6 cookbooks because that might take more than a couple of months, but more like a couple of lifetimes which I obviously don't have, but I will try to pick the ones that are the most interesting. I have to admit that so far of all the cookbook authors on www.archive.org's list, I found, Dorothy Daly's "Italian Cooking," by far the best(see Italy Revisited/"XXX Italian Cookbook by Dorothy Daly"). Her knowledge and love of the Italian way of life shines through in her lovely book. Strangely enough, not a single word about this author has been written [on line] that I am aware of - even Wikipedia does not have an entry for this trailblazer. Still the American-born, Antonia Isola, did introduce Americans to the art of Italian cuisine and for that she is rightfully admired.

About the Author
Antonia Isola

Author of Simple Italian Cookery, published by Harper and Brothers, February, 1912, and the first Italian cookbook to be published in the US. She had lived in Rome for some years, and was well-versed in Italian food, but the publishers chose the pseudonym to impart "authenticity" to the work.
