The Sasol e.Birds of Southern Africa is an interactive version of the best-selling Sasol Birds of Southern Africa field guide. This application has specific features that will enhance your birding experience.

NB: Please note that an additional download of 185MB is required once this app has been installed. Please ensure you use a WiFi connection to prevent additional data costs.

FEATURES:
- Images, distribution maps and text descriptions of over 950 bird species found in the Southern African region.
- Audible calls for over 630 bird species
- A "Smart Search" that allows you to easily identify a bird using beak shape, bird size, bird colour and habitat.
- You can select a region of Southern Africa, so that the lists of birds throughout the program display only the birds in your region. Includes GPS detection of your current location.
- "Bird Compare" to allow you to compare two birds on the same screen (including calls).
- A personal bird list that stores your bird sightings saved to the device* and can be exported to your storage card, email or to ebird.org extended record format.
- GPS location tagging of bird sightings.
- View the Bird Index by English or Afrikaans bird names.

* Uninstalling/reinstalling the program will result in the loss of your list, it is recommended that you keep a backup from the application (My List -> Export).

Promising... Lists, sketches and sounds are good. Smart search don't work most of the time - sometimes freezes app. Requires afrikaans descriptions. When in Afr mode it does not show Eng names. Some Afr words has spelling errors. Requires urgent bug fixes for 5 stars.

Always improving. This has become a handy app while in field. Does need to have a broader location selection. Considering Larks, just selecting 'Western Cape' is open to omissions in the list. Slowly evolving from assistance while birding to a reference tool.

Comprehensive guide thats fits in your pocket! A nice app which is very handy, especially when you are on the go. The only problem I have had is that I get an error when I try to export my list. Now there is no way for me to backup my sightings list, please fix this bug in the next update!

Paper book is better... If I have the paper book available, I use that first. The smart search is all but useless. The export function on an older version worked, so I exported my lists. I then bought a new tablet and phone, tried to import my lists, the software says it can't import - now I have to manually input all my lists again. Funny enough, it doesn't export anymore either. Support staff are as useless as the software. Very expensive purchase, and would have been better off buying second book to keep in my car.

Great app, can improve Works well and the side-by-side comparison is cool. Have to get all the way out of search results before a new search. A gps position for the sighting would be really nice seeing as most phones have gps. And lastly photos of the birds, because the drawn images aren't always 100% accurate on colours.

Disappointing. in my opinion a poor implementation. The smart search is not much use to me. Compared to what I am used to, a competing bird e-book not yet available on Android, this is a big disappointment.

Better than the old PDA version I bought the app over the phone, but decided to download the database (185MB) on the PC. I`ve tried 5 times, but the download stops time after time, never going past 118MB. This renders the application useless on my phone and it`s money wasted. I had the PDA version which I used often, but this is a HUGE disappointment !! - 1 Day later - E-mailed the developer and they tried their best to assist me, but it still fails. They are now going to mail me a CD with the database. Thanks a lot !! - 1 week later - Received the CD with the database and everything works perfectly - better than the old PDA version.

A large disappointment - Failure to install Web site says "This app is compatible with your phone". ... However, having paid for the book, the application fails to install on my Android device, missing 180 Mb of files. Upon attempting to install these files, I get an error message. Obviously there needs to be much better control over the installation process. Now I have to go through the tedious process of trying to get my money back from the publisher. Instead of benefiting from this purchase, it has brought me financial loss and a lot of hassle.

I am running it on my Galaxy Tab and whenever I return to the main page it force closes. I have sent repeated requests to the developers who have not even had the courtesy to reply. In addition, the functionality isn't very good. They present Sasol's excellent content and do little else than that. Their "smart-search" is really poor.
