De djembé is één van de meest gewaardeerde percussie-instrumenten die afkomstig zijn van West-Afrika. De djembé neemt binnen de Afrikaanse maatschappij een plaats in als sociaal muziekinstrument dat wordt aangewend in geval van viering of samenkomst met familie, vrienden en kennissen. Het bespelen van deze drum door Afrikanen is veelal van jongs af aan aangeleerd door praktijk en ervaring.
Muzikanten die dit instrument eveneens bespelen, bezitten graag een schriftelijke begeleiding met betrekking tot de ritmes en sessies die zij gezamenlijk in praktijk wensen te brengen.
