An unsettling view of small-town life...
Woodview Heights is an unsettling story about what happens in a small, ordinary town when first pets, and then children, start vanishing. There's a nice sense of menace and forboding that builds up through out the tale, although the climax is somewhat predictable. There's a nice little downbeat coda that means it ends on a reflective note, rather than the full on horror of what has gone before.

A good story that has a point as well as a good plot - recommended.

「最後の事件」（さいごのじけん、The Final Problem）は、アーサー・コナン・ドイルによるシャーロック・ホームズシリーズの短編小説の一つ。「ストランド・マガジン」1893年12月号、「マクリュアーズ・マガジン」1893年12月号初出。

ドイルのホームズものの断筆作となった。この作品の後、ホームズの死を悲しんだロンドン・シティーの金融マンが、喪章をつけて通勤したという噂もある。

これ以降、ホームズものの新作は8年後の1901年に発表された『バスカヴィル家の犬』まで待たねばならなかった（ただしこの事件は「最後の事件」以前に起こったものとしている）。ホームズが復活するのはさらに2年後の1903年、「空き家の冒険」によってである。


あらすじ
冒頭で、ワトスンが前作「海軍条約文書事件」を最後にホームズの物語を断筆し、ホームズと死別することになった事件については語らないつもりだったが、ジェームズ・モリアーティ教授の兄弟がモリアーティの名誉を擁護し始めたため、やむを得ずこの事件の真相を書くことになったと説明している。

ホームズとワトスンは、終生のライバルであるモリアーティ教授の追跡を逃れ、ロンドンからスイスまでやってくる。だがここにもモリアーティの追跡の手は伸びており、1891年5月4日、ライヘンバッハの滝の岩棚でホームズとモリアーティは対峙することになる。

ホームズとワトスンがライヘンバッハの滝に着いたところで、ワトスンは宿泊していたホテルからの手紙を携えた使いに会う。手紙にはイギリス人患者が病に倒れ、同国人の医者に診てもらいたい旨が記されていた。ワトスンはホームズを置いてホテルまで戻るが、それは偽の手紙であった。胸騒ぎを覚えながらもワトスンはあわててライヘンバッハまで引き返すが、ホームズの姿はどこにもなく、登山杖と滝の頂上へ向かう2筋の足跡が残されているだけだった。

足跡をたどると、滝の頂上で争った跡があり、そこにはホームズの最後の挨拶となる短い書き置きが残されていた。ホームズは、先刻の手紙が自分を1人にするためのモリアーティ教授の罠だとわかっていながらワトスンを見送ったのだった。

モリアーティ教授について

この作品で、ワトスンはホームズからモリアーティ教授のことを聞くのを初めてだといっている。しかし、後に発表された『恐怖の谷』では、すでにモリアーティ教授が事件の黒幕であると聞かされている。
