Swiftness of life in America in the late 19th - early 20th century gave rise to "lifestyle magazine" literature and the emergence of a new type of short-story writing – the "American novella". In American novellas the lively style of narration is combined with the sparkling humor and gentle irony of the author towards the characters. The serious things about them meet the comic; brevity in portrayal is compensated by vibrant and bright features of the characters. Main characters of the stories are often quiet, inconspicuous personalities, the so-called "people of no importance". However, what great love and talent of the author are invested in each of them, how much attention is paid to every detail and twists and turns of their "little" lives!
