This application provides reference to over 950 ragas used in carnatic music that includes Melakarta (fundamental) and Janya (derived) ragas. The most interesting feature of this app is that you can search for a raga from its swaras (notes) and vice versa. It also provides the Arohanam (ascending scale) and Avarohanam (descending scale) of each raga.

[2013-07-14] A Google User: ORIGIN OF CARNATIC Dear nanda kumar, it has not originated from karnataka.All three legends and founders of carnatic music was born in TIRUVARUR IN TAMIL NADU.Their homes are now Govt monuments.Thiyagarajar,.muthusami dikshidar,syama sastrigal all three were living in bakthi marga and ragaas were flowing out ,out of inspiration from god.Those ragaas are compliled and called as carnatic.They were using telugu/sanskrit for composing ragaas,because in that time(now also), all classical singers were ashamed of singing in tamil despite born and brought up in tamil nadu.Only subramanya bharati broke that tradition and sang in tamil knowing that she is the mother of all other southern languages! Big propaganda was made that time not to sing in tamil. ALAS! TAMIL IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE IN INDIA HAVING PERFECTED GRAMMER WHICH IS POSSIBLE ONLY OUT OF SLOW EVOLUTION OVER THE CENTURIES!,THAT ITSELF IS THE PROOF FOR ITS SUPERIORITY.SWAMINATHA IYER WAS KNOWING THIS AND PRESERVED MANY WORKS IN TAMIL Maestro ILLAYARAJA handles almost all carnatic ragaas to give wonderful variation in those divine creations. many carnatic singers are just repeating the old ragaas like parrot without any inspiration! |
