作者褚人获，字稼轩，又字学稼，号石农，长洲（今江苏苏州）人。
　　《隋唐演义》以隋唐历史为题材。宋代以来，有关隋末群雄割据，“十八路烟尘”造反的种种传说和故事，一直在民间广泛流传，演隋唐历史的小说，数量颇多，可以构成一个较大的系列。《隋唐演义》之前较有影响的同类题材的作品有明代的《隋唐志传》、《隋炀帝艳史》和《隋史遗文》，褚人获对上述作品广采博收，同时吸收了唐宋传奇的有关材料，加工改写成七十万字的《隋唐演义》。作为说唐故事的集大成者，《隋唐演义》几乎注意到古籍及传说中所有有关隋唐历史的轶事、杂说，把它们溶到一部作品中，而且杂而不乱，形成了自己的情节体系，可谓后来居上。

　　隋炀帝在通俗小说中是有名的荒淫残暴的君主。他在位十四年，曾三次发动对高丽的战争，又每年调民工数百万营建东宫，开凿运河，修筑长城，苛捐、暴政，搞得民不聊生。当时有些人为了躲避兵役、劳役，竟自断手足，称为“福手福足”。隋末农民大起义就是在这种背景下发生的。《隋唐演义》在一定程度上艺术地再现了历史的真实情况。作品前半部，以细致的笔墨描写了“穷土木炀帝逞豪华”（第二十七回）的许多令人怵目惊心的事实：选绣女、建洛宫，“弄得这些百姓东奔西驰”，“各府州县邑，如同鼎沸”。炀帝为了游玩，强令开凿自大梁至淮河的运河，强征天下民夫，“如有隐匿者，诛三族”。大小官吏，正好趁此机会变本加厉地酷虐百姓。在这样一个反抗的烈火一触即燃的时刻，不但程咬金、尉迟恭等贫苦农民要揭竿而起，就是一些下级官吏（如秦琼）和富有正义感的中小地主（如单雄信也感到是“出去做一番事业”的时候了。在反隋英雄中，秦琼一生的经历最具典型性。秦琼曾充任过地方上的“捕盗都头”，对造反的“勾当”几度迟疑。当“盗贼”程咬金、王伯当等人以拜寺为名在家聚义时，他出于江湖义气，毅然冒着生命危险放走了众人。在亲眼看到了麻叔夜吃人等一系列惊心动魄的事件，  
大隋唐四猛八大锤
彻底认清了隋王朝的极端腐败本质后，他自觉主动走上了反抗道路。参加起义队伍后，他利用自己在江湖上的声望，为壮大农民起义队伍做出了有益的贡献。在瓦岗寨上，他成了翟让军事集团的中坚力量之一。在说唐故事演变过程中，群雄反隋，尤其是瓦岗寨英雄们的反抗故事，有较好的基础，褚人获对这一部分的加工也最见功力，不但思想内容上多有可取，艺术上也取得了一定成就。它较成功地塑造了秦琼、单雄信、程咬金等草泽英雄的群像。这些人物，既有传奇色彩，又是生活中活生生的个性不同的人。如单雄信耿直淳厚而自视甚高，程咬金鲁莽而风趣善谑，罗成勇猛而少年气盛，都给人留下较深刻的印像。作者不但注意从重大的事件、情节中写人，还能通过细节描写表现人物细微的感情和心理。如描写主要人物之一的秦琼的许多节文字，就相当精彩、细腻。
